Jordan Vauvert Est-ce qu'avec Sentinel Ayloss a créé l'album parfait ? La question est légitime. II frôlait déjà le sans faute, la seule fausse note étant la batterie programmée qui se détachait trop du reste. Dans Sentinel, elle se fond bien mieux dans la masse. Dissonant pendant sa première moitié puis épique et même mystique, cet album nous fait parcourir une cosmogonie spectaculaire. Je n'ai cessé de relever des influences qui ont marqué le black metal atmosphérique plus récent. Un monde dans un monde... Favorite track: Quest for the Supramental.

Alice M. I test-listened the first few tracks while driving to and from a theatre to see the movie about Ennio Morricone. While I was already enjoying it during the inbound trip, it's while going back home that it really clicked, as if the movie unravelled symphonic qualities in that otherwise fairly aggressive metal. I was actually surprised, then, to see the official description depicting it as dissonant, etc. The icing on the cake was to discover the ambient last track at dusk, outdoors. Favorite track: The Coming of Age.

Sentinel is an album that Ayloss would have been released with a different name yet undecided (at that time) to keep every facet of his creativity under the moniker of Spectral Lore.

Sentinel is the first album in which the artist unfolded his personal version of what “true” Black Metal is, meaning a warrior-like album that delved into aggressive darkness and dissonance.
It was supposed to present the Spectral Lore sound in its extremes, hence the 30 minute Ambient song in the end.

By separating the elements, Ayloss focused on exploring them in a more monochromatic way. During the course of the album, there is a noticeable course from dissonance to consonance and from oppressive darkness to an epic, triumphant feeling that culminates in “My Ascension into the Celestial Spheres“.
Lyrically, it is a coming of age story in a cosmic level that ends with finding a clear transcendental purpose out of life.

This vinyl issue of Sentinel comes with exclusive brand new hand-drawn art by Czech artist Vojtech Doubek (Moonroot Art; Kalmankantaja, Mare Cognitum, etc.). It also comes with a fold-out poster.
