II peut être considéré comme le premier véritable album de Spectral Lore déjà par sa durée gigantesque (entre I et II, on passe presque du simple au double) mais surtout parce que le niveau de maîtrise est tout autre. Avec ses ambiances, II réussit là où I avait partiellement échoué : elles permettent à Ayloss de faire des va-et-vient permanents entre nature et cosmos, entre méditations et déprime. Organique, son black metal est cohérent. La seule ombre au tableau, c'est la batterie programmée.

Everyone knows that Spectral Lore’s III is one of the absolute best black metal albums of the 2010s, a first-ballot member of the black metal hall of fame. What fewer people realise, however, is that II is a pretty goddamned impressive album as well that was overlooked in its time due to its unpolished nature. Well, this remastered and extended version is, somewhat to my surprise, a fairly new listening experience that, for first time listeners, should demonstrate why II deserves respect.

II is Spectral Lore’s first “real” album in terms of length and ambition, while Sentinel is Ayloss’ first strong effort in terms of production and efficiency.
II represents the first, if a little bit premature version of the Spectral Lore sound that was achieved by introducing more Metal elements into the experimental Ambient Black Metal sound of the debut.
In II the two elements of Metal and ambience are in a perfect balance, not making completely clear at any point if you’re listening to a Metal or an Ambient music album.
Also, II features the first really progressive and ambitious Spectral Lore composition, “The Thorns that Guide my Warpath“, which is one of Ayloss’ favourite up to this day.
